Art: 2009 Smallville Big Bang Covers

tallihensiaAs I'm working on the 2010 art, I am blatantly reminded that I probably should have posted these (and will post the 2010 when done).
I consider myself to be more of a writer than an artist, but I do like to dabble on the other side too. Last year, I wasn't writing for BB, so I figured I'd volunteer for beta and art in case they needed it, since I knew there currently aren't a lot of active artists.
Turns out there *really* weren't a lot of artists and I ended up doing six covers. Yikes. This year, thank goodness, there are more artists (I think?) and I only had three. (Of the three, two are done, and I'm still struggling with the third one, which was the one that was my first choice and I really wanted to do. o.o Darn it. The art just won't behave! Gotta go finish beta'ing too. ^^; Big Bang deadlines!)
Anyhow, retroactively, here's the art from 2009.
When I was first doing it, they asked for "covers" and phrased like that, it almost always means book cover types. However, for posted online stories, I like horizontal banner-type artwork better usually. But I wanted to give the authors the option, so for the first three, I did two types, one 'cover' and one 'banner'. Then I made the mistake of asking the mods if they needed more art... and got three more assignments. ^^; Those three only got one version each just from sheer lack of time.

Pairing/Genre: Clex, Action/Romance
Summary: Tornados can cause huge amounts of destruction, but they also allow new things to grow that were never there before. When Lex encountered a young man whose truck had been blown into the ditch while trying to escape from an impending tornado, he had no idea that something completely new would grow between them.
Loved this idea in the summary. Spent a lot of time assembling the various pictures for it and was pretty happy with the final result. It probably took the longest of all of them, but it was worth it. A lot of happy hours went in there. ^^

Summary: What happens when Lex is castle-bound by a paranormal blizzard? Why, Clark gets locked in with him!
Another artistically fun one. Blizzard, castle, Clark and Lex in trouble together... ;D I actually had a lot more trouble than I'd anticipated for it. ^^; I got all the right pieces together, but they weren't working well with each other. In this case, the banner turned out better than the cover. Still not as happy with it as my imagination, but ah well, not too bad in the end.

Summary: It’s the end of the world but the beginning of another, where Clark must endure an ancient Kryptonian maturity ritual in order to become emperor to the descendants of his birth race, and where Lex must struggle with the question of identity in the wake of the destruction of his own, but is all truly as it seems on their new world?
I went on this one with the obvious symbolism - the crown for the king, the House of El in the background, Lex dismayed, and Clark not quite sure himself but more concerned about Lex. In retrospect, I'm not quite as happy with the choice of picture for Lex (could have made him less angry), but everything else came together fairly well.

Summary: A year has passed since Clark disappeared after confronting the two Disciples from Arrival. Mayhem has spread from Smallville through and beyond Metropolis, resulting in a heavy death toll and the declaration of martial law. Where’s our hero when you need him?
This one was actually a little bit of a struggle because I wanted to get all creative with it... but when it came down to it, it was better off served being fairly plain. The title, the clues, the guys... and there it was. I was slightly dismayed to see that the clues were taken out of the final version of the summary and panicked thinking they were no longer applicable, but Jen assured me it was all good!

Summary: Roses are red, Violets are blue, Pink kryptonite makes you a girl, What will Clark and Lex do?
This one was a lot of fun! The whole idea of the story for one, and getting the elements together for it... darn time constraints! I really wanted to give Clark breasts and do some manipping to get him really a girl, but since this was one of the ones I got at the end, I... didn't have time for it {sigh}. So I tried to emphasize the 'changing' aspect a bit more with the characters. I still love the way Lex is looking at Clark undressing... ;D Still wish I could have done more manipping for it. Oh well. ^^

Summary: What if the meteor shower occurred in Metropolis and not in Smallville? How much of life is fate and how much is predetermined?
I was actually kindof bummed that the author had to drop out because I rather liked how this one turned out. Got the main elements in and it fit together pretty nicely. I sent it on to the author anyhow in case it ever gets posted later.

I was really sweating bullets there for awhile, and that's why I pretty much dropped off the face of the earth. LOL, but they're all done and the first three posted already (!!), so yay!
Can't wait to see your posters when they come out! :)
