Sometimes it takes the years to learn what things were like. There's the instinct for adults to look on teenagers with "you'll find out" reflexes, but it's true - it takes experience, and how do you get that except by living it?
Clark wasn't totally lonely before - he had Lois in his life for romance (his death kind of killed that, pun wincingly intended), and he did (and does) have very good friends, but Kon truly became family in the way not many others could. And Lex, well, yes. ^^
Clark in the middle of a forest fire is something I'd love to see a picture of sometime. I can just see him doing that. :)
