...Ok, I broke down and tried to look up the 'hippy-Lex' and it was way more 'fight The Man!' than I remember, so that's probably why you don't remember; it was out in early 2002. (Apparently the hippy-ish part was him wearing a red wig and being all 'down with corporate America!' -- how he was going about -doing- it? not so much -- through corporate terrorism in Metropolis.) The explanation for the memory loss was that he was infected by mind-nanites or something. He was getting along a -lot- better with Superman, though. I remember it ended on a happy?/sad? note with Lex remembering and ending up back in the White House but being really regretful (almost angry) about not being that other self (too responsible to give it all up and continue on once he remembered his past?). ...But yeah, when he wasn't right in the middle of blowing stuff up, apparently he was a much nicer Alexander during that time ^_^;; Definitely more under the surface.
I shrug at current DCU comics depth. They had an interesting Lex storyline in Action Comics a little while ago that, well, had more depth into him than I'd seen elsewhere recently (e.g.: the Superboy and World of Krypton comics). I felt it absolutely nailed his current comics incarnation of the character in the last issue of that run. Not sure what things are gonna be like post-Flashpoint, though. (I worry about how much the 52-issues thing is or is gonna -end- -up- being a publicity stunt before business-as-usual. I'm not sure I trust the upcoming writer's rewrites. Guess we'll see.)
