It wasn't H & P. The other fic, iirc, was of a more serious tone (perhaps my real issue was that it took itself too seriously? Or that Lex's reasoning was... not quite so agreeable to me?) and was much older, probably my prewriting days (which, okay, doesn't say much. >D)
I think it was because H&P was such a fun story that it worked for me there. And Veil is a much more serious fic, but I adore this version of Lex. (I can see and understand his logic here.) Clark's reaction and understanding of it also helps, because he's not really hurt or offended. The fact that he gets it makes it okay, too.
^__^ The element is similar, but the delivery is very different between the fics, so I wouldn't worry about that. The idea of the tray filling up is hilarious. >D
In writing, there's always some element of bleed from fic to fic, even if it's only details that we notice as writers (and then purposely change). That meme a while back, with taking the first line of fics? That definitely made me aware of a few habits I have in regards to fics, but I know there's more. (For example, I've had two fics in the last few months where Clark disrupts Lex's marriage.)
I do think you have a good point about not reading while writing, though. It's one thing when ideas and elements you've already used creep in, but I find it really frustrating when I find myself mimicking other writers, which always falls into that uncomfortable area shy of plagiarism, but frightfully close enough to make me wrangle a story in a different direction.
